A Fragmented Hard Drive Will Slow Computer
A fragmented hard drive can slow your computer performance and cause you computer to be less reliable. When files become fragmented your computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened and recombine the pieces in memory. This added work will negatively impact response time.
Some fragmentation is normal on all computers. As you use your computer fragmented files will begin to build up. Hard drives that have little free space will accumulate fragmented files at a faster rate than hard drive with a lot of available space.
Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that recombines fragmented files on your hard drive so that each occupies a single space on the drive. When the files are stored without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.
Disk Defragmenting should be run about every month or so at regular intervals. It's also a good idea to run Windows Disk Defragmenter more often if you've installed new programs, added many new files or if your hard drive is at least 85% full. Disk defragmenter has a time saving feature that will check for fragmentation and tell you if you need to defragment your hard disk.
A large hard drive with severe fragmentation can take hours to recombine the files. I suggest setting aside a big block of time when the computer isn't being used and let the defragmenter run. If you keep the fragmentation under control and maintain a monthly schedule the hard drive will defragment much faster.
