Never Overfill Your Hard Drive
The Windows Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk to improve the performance of your computer. The tool finds files that can be safely deleted and then allows you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the files.
Use can use the Disk Cleanup tool to:
- Remove temporary Internet files.
- Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Remove Windows temporary files such as error reports.
- Remove optional Windows components that you don't use.
- Remove installed programs that you no longer use.
- Remove unused restore points and shadow copies from System Restore.
Temporary Internet files can take up a lot of disk space because browsers save each page you visit in a cache file for faster access later. Over time these cached pages can fill hundreds of megabytes of storage space.
To use Disk Cleanup Windows 7 users can click Start, click All Programs, Click Accessories, Click System Tools and then Click Disk Cleanup
Windows XP users Click Start, go to All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
